Gond artists strive to depict the links between nature and man. Gonds are one of the largest tribal groups in India and live across several states in central India. The name Gond is derived from Kond, meaning green mountains where the tribes live. Traditionally Gond homes are decorated with two types of paintings for the walls and floors, which are made for weddings or festivals. Traditionally the colors were made from flowers, leaves, stones, rice, turmeric as well as different clays. Brushes were twigs wrapped in old cloth. Today the Gond artist use inks and acrylics to pay homage to their rich culture.
