John collected these masks on a trip to Jaipur. They come from all over India, and they have an entrancing patina. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, masks are very popular among the Kukana and Warli tribes. They can portray animals, birds, gods and goddesses, and sometimes even demons and ghosts, and are generally used in dances and dramas with religious or mythological themes in the hopes that the spirit would be pleased and would bless the tribe with protection or good tidings.
